Last year (2010) the Community Speed Watch project run by the Ilkeston Rural Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team received a new injection of funding thanks to local residents and councillors.
A number of parish councils in the area have worked alongside Derbyshire County Councillor Carol Hart to purchase a speed detection gun and associated safety items for use in the Ilkeston Rural community, which of course includes West Hallam.
The new equipment was put to good use on Tuesday 6 July 2010 when PC Russ Crooks and PCSO Jen Hobson were joined by Councillor Bruce Broughton and Mr Peter Briggs, Clerk to the Parish Council to carry out checks on Beech Lane.
During the session, which lasted from 7.50am to 9.30am, four vehicles were detected speeding - three at 36mph, one at 39 mph and one at 41 mph - in a 30 mph limit! The drivers of these vehicles will be hearing from the police shortly.
Any residents are welcome to help at future sessions - please come along either to take part or simply observe....
This is your opportunity to help increase road safety in your neighbourhood.
PC Russ Crooks said ‘Together we have made a positive contribution to road safety’
Parish Clerk Mr Peter Briggs said ‘We have made a big impact today. We have clearly achieved a reduction in speed simply by being there’
