West Hallam Community Speed Watch - Can you help our village to be a safer place to live?

After receiving a number of comments and complaints from residents about speeding vehicles in our village, the Parish Council agreed to purchase the necessary equipment and join the Community Speedwatch scheme. This was in addition to the installation of two Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) on High Lane.

Many of you will have seen our Speedwatch volunteers in the village in their Hi-Viz jackets and speed gun taking part in a session. These volunteers are all residents of West Hallam and are concerned about speeding vehicles and want to do something about it.

Last year, there were a number of sessions in the village at various locations. Sessions usually last for one hour and are organised by our excellent local Speedwatch Coordinator, Rob Hare.

The aim is not necessarily to catch motorists speeding but to make them think about their speed by having a visible presence. Volunteers are not required to confront a speeding motorist but simply record the speed if it is in excess of the limit and report the registration, time and date to the police who will follow this up. The vast majority of motorists are obeying the speed limit especially when they approach and pass the volunteers although some have bee caught last year despite all the signs and warnings.

Many residents have told us of locations in West Hallam where a speedwatch presence would be a good idea. The existing team would love to hold more sessions but are restricted by the number of volunteers.

More Volunteers = More Sessions = More Locations

Can you help by volunteering for a minimum of just two hours per month? Full training and equipment is provided. You will make a positive impact in controlling speeding in West Hallam.
